MY 40TH BIRTHDAY {asheville baby photographer}

Sunday, October 28, 2012

(FYI this is Stacey not Dawn writing this post.  I figured this one had to be more real and come straight from the source.)

Turning 40 has been difficult for me.  I was fine with 30, but 40 with deeper wrinkles, a mind that is becoming more forgetful, a knee that makes weird noises as I go up and down the stairs and a weaker bladder (thanks to kids), I'm feeling anxious about what else is going to start wearing out.  My mind jumped to, "In 10 years when I'm 50, will I still be able to get lay on the floor to get that perfect new crawler shot and be able to get back up again without a client helping me up?!!!"  I know this probably sounds ridiculous and 50 year olds may read this and laugh at me, but it is a fear of mine.   At this moment (40 years & 17 days), I am doing better with the idea that I'm getting older.  With age comes wisdom, right?  I would much rather be wise than young.

OK, moving on.  I want to share how I celebrated my 40th!

My husband Fred & I were able to get away for a few day to explore Washington, D.C.  A place neither of us had ever been to.  What a beautiful drive through the North Carolina & Virginia mountains.  The leaves were blazing with color!

Thanks to a dear friend who surprised us by using her Hyatt points, we were able to stay at a fabulous hotel with a bed, couch & TV all larger than our own!  Plus a gourmet breakfast that I didn't have to cook each morning!  In DC, we explored the Smithsonian's National History Museum, National Gallery of Art, walked around the National Mall, the Capitol & the White House.  With only 2 full days to explore, we barely even scratched the surface.  We also walked around historic Georgetown and toured George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon.  This was probably our favorite place.  To see the very chair he sat in when he was president, to see the things he built himself was just amazing.  I never knew how ingenious he was.  The movie that showed his great leadership and humility was inspiring.  The people wanted to make him king, but he wanted a democracy.  This is definitely a must see.

One last thing about our trip.  We LOVE good food and plan trips around tasting new things.  This trip we decided to find food trucks.  With the help of the Yelp app, we found where all the business people get their fast, affordable, gourmet lunches & desserts.  Let's just say AMAZING!!!!

October's Photography Tip:  Fun ways to document your child's growth
If you are a new parent, you can almost become a psychic and know when a person sees you and your baby together, they are going to say something to the effect of, "Enjoy every moment you can! They grow up so fast!"  Sadly, they are so right!  And even though you may be snapping shots of your little one at lightening speed when they blow a new kind of spit bubble or halfway roll over, you may still be missing out on how to really show just how much they're growing.

Below are some fantastic tips to help you "remember when" your little one was that small.

0-12 months

Some like to document weekly, some monthly and some just by the milestones their little one is achieving.  However frequent you want to capture this time, here are some ideas to make them a little bit more special.

  • Use an object like a stuffed animal, a hat, a special book, or basically anything meaningful to you or your child that does not change shape.  Sit this next to your wee one and watch them grow and eventually hold these objects in your pictures.
  • Place them in an object that they can grow into such as a unique chair, a wagon or a basket.
  • Along with placing them in an object, you can also place them by a tree, bush or flowerbed that changes seasonally.
  • Write out your child's age on a chalkboard wrapped in a decorative frame (like one of the Organic Bloom Frames!) to playfully display that particular milestone.

One year and beyond!

After the 1st year, you may just want to highlight their growth on a yearly scale instead of weekly/monthly.  Let's face it, it's going to start getting much harder to keep them in one place long enough to take a picture now that they are becoming mobile!

Dress up for girls and boys!  For the girls, a simple timeless dress (little black dress time!) and a necklace.  She's going to want to play dress up in your room eventually so why not start now? :)  For the boys, pick one of Dad's dress shirts and ties and watch how your little boy grows up and begins to fill them out as a young man.  The key is to never get rid of these articles of clothing so you can really see how much they are changing.

I just saw this last great idea on The Organic Bloom Frames Facebook page and I sure wish I had been doing it these past several years with my boys.  Again, take a chalkboard and have your child hold it on the 1st day of school.  On it, write what grade they are starting, the date and "When I grow up, I want to be a ..." What a precious way to document their growth and dreams.

Sweetie-pies in September {asheville baby photographer}

Monday, October 15, 2012

SO glad to be back in the swing of things.  September was a month filled with gorgeous little & tiny ones for me to photograph.  Here are some sneak peeks into three of my sessions from last month...

Learning to stand . . .
As this sweet family rounds the corner to the end of their 1st Year Baby Plan, I was excited to capture a 30 minute milestone session of little J. learning to stand.   The session took place at one of my favorite spots in Asheville, the Botanical Gardens.  We moved the time up a couple of hours because a storm was starting to move in . . . thank goodness the weather held out for these fun pictures!

Tiny times 2!
This was my 1st opportunity to photograph newborn twins and it was oh so sweet. B. & M. were born back in May at about 4lbs each.  The little guys are 4 months old in these pix.  Their amazing mother, McKenzie works in entertainment for Walt Disney World. Multiple times throughout the year she heads down to Orlando to work at the most wonderful place on earth...too cool, right?  Need less to say, she will be slowing down a bit with the new twins and their big sister; however, she will soon begin a slightly new adventure with Disney. She is now starting her own personalized Disney vacation planning company where she will take care of every detail so that families can get the most out of their dream vacation & know they spent their money wisely.

~Precious premie~
Oh sleepy newborns, you make my job so easy! I could have taken pix all day of this premie who decided to show up 1 month early.  This being her 1st session of her 1st Year Baby Plan, you will get to watch her grow as I document each milestone of sweet baby A. over the next 12 months.
