"flea market" does not do it justice! {asheville baby photographer}

Sunday, September 30, 2012

really?  i want to know. . . where does the name "flea market" come from and who used it first???  it just seems like a weird phrase to me.  anyhow, as i promised way back at the beginning of September (crazy that October is only one day away!), this is the 5th week of the month so this particular post will be dedicated to community events!

Veritas Christian Academy PTF Flea Market
like the title of this post declares: the name "flea market" does not do this event justice.  as a shopper of this event in years past, i can tell you that the items donated to this event are high quality secondhand goods that are not to be missed.  parents of the children attending Veritas have already donated so many items for this event that the semi-truck used to house the items is already full and parents have been asked to wait to bring their additional items on the week of the event because of the overflow.  the school gym will be packed with all kinds of furniture, home decor, sports equipment, clothes, electronics, toys and much more!  i bet you can guess where i will be on saturday morning!

Click here to find out more about the flea market and Veritas.

when:   next saturday!
             october 6th
             8am - 2pm
where:  veritas gymnasium
             17 cane creek
             fletcher, nc 28732

maybe i'll see you there . . .

a service dog for my son {asheville baby photographer}

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog;
but you're never friendless ever, if you have a dog.
Douglas Mallock

today i want to share something personal with you...it's about my youngest son, Luke.  our family is taking the first steps on a journey which will hopefully lead us to him getting matched with an autism service dog. the life of an autistic child is no easy road...and i really feel the road for him will be more bearable with  a constant companion of man's best friend who is specifically trained for his particular needs.

Step 1: complete!
Luke's application has been accepted and we've been invited to the Assistance Dogs for Autism facility in Harmony, NC to observe how he interacts with the different types of dogs. since highly specialized dog training facilities like this are not on the corner of every street, it was a major blessing to start with that this one is just a few hours away from our home in Asheville.

during our upcoming visit, they will be evaluating if he truly needs an service dog or just a companion.  my hope is that they are able to match him with one of their service dogs....the things these dogs can do for autistic children astounds me and i really believe it would be a turning point for Luke.

it would be such an answer to prayer to have one of these dogs that would be able to calm Luke when he is having a meltdown, keep him from running off, redirect repetitive behavior, help improve his quality of sleep and most importantly help him socially.  for a child who does not have a friend and is socially awkward, the thought of him having a best friend by his side wherever he goes, would be the greatest thing to me.

our appointment is this week.  please join me in praying that this 2 hour drive to Harmony, NC will be the start of the roughly 2 year process of finding the right dog to bond with, train, and befriend our Luke.

if you would like to learn more about the facility we will be visiting this week, please check out their website at http://www.autismassistancedog.com/.  There are great written and video testimonials on the site.

fun things to do with your Instagrams! {asheville baby photographer}

Sunday, September 16, 2012

who doesn't love instagram?? even those of us (like me, dawn) who still have phones from the stoneage can't help but appreciate the way instagram brings a fun spin on the images captured by smartphone users (like stacey).
now there are even more reasons to love the instagram app.  companies are popping up all over the web offering new ways to enjoy your instagram photos by more than just sharing them on facebook.

mini & tiny books

these are too cute!  what a perfect alternative to the bulging scrapbooks and photo albums lined up on your already over-crowded bookshelf.

with the mini & tiny books by PRINTSTAGRAM measuring at mere inches, these would fit perfectly into a stylish bowl or tray on your coffee table and would be sure to spark fun conversation.

...and the prices are tiny too!
mini book (measures 3.5" x 2.4")
set of 2 for $12
tiny book (measures 1.7" x 1.5")
set of 3 for $10

yummy chocolate pictures

seriously . . . COCOAGRAPH allows you to upload your own instagram photos and they will print it as an edible photograph on top of delicious chocolate bars!  what a great idea for favors at your next baby/wedding shower or birthday party.

decorate your fridge and office

as a user on STICKYGRAM put it,
"your fridge just got cooler". . . ha!

this company realized the obvious:
your instagrams make the best little magnets.

see for yourself!

($14.99 per sheet of 9)

protect your phone in style

bring your instagrams full circle by snapping the pic, upgrading the image with the instagram app, and then have CASETAGRAM turn it into an uber-personalized protective case for your smartphone or iPad.

head over to their website to find out which phones are currently compatible with their cases.

my summer scrapbook {asheville baby photographer}

Sunday, September 9, 2012

for me, not much could be better than spending time with my friends...except, of course,  for when i get to take pictures of their precious little ones too! i truly, truly love it. although i was not technically back into full work mode, that did not stop babies from being born or children growing up. haha. time & life wait for no one.

with that being said, i could not help myself but to go and spend time in asheville's botanical gardens and friends' homes over these past few months to photograph some special people in my life.

while getting the images together for this post, i made an awesome discovery. . . my 3 distinct styles of photography!  the images i picked out for today naturally fell into one of three categories:  color burst, nostalgic vintage & timeless black & white.  if you are just getting to know me and my business, i would say these collections are a great representation of what baby pix photography is all about.

on a more personal side . . . here are some pix from our family vacation in Brevard this past July.  when i'm on vacation, i opt for my iPhone rather than my "good" camera for convenience sake.  i do not like to be weighed down with a bunch of gear nor do i worry about keeping all the photography rules.  instead, i am more focused on capturing the moment to document our time together.  since i have older kids i like adding warm earthy tones with high contrast to my images.

113 days till Christmas!!! {asheville baby photographer}

Sunday, September 2, 2012

i believe it's safe to say that for most of us, the countdown has begun.  summer is drawing to a close and department stores will undoubtedly be trading out their left over halloween costumes for their shiny new christmas items in just a few short weeks.  as you start to shift your mindset to the cooler months and holidays, my hope is that baby pix photography would come across your radar as well.

here are some specials happening in the month of september ONLY that are sure to help you get a jump start on your gift giving ideas for this december.
SEPTEMBER SPECIALS:
*mini sessions (30 min.) are only 75.00
*full sessions (2 hrs.) are only 150.00

*receive 10% off your holiday card order

please be aware that there are only a limited number of spots available for this year's holiday sessions and also note that i will not be scheduling any holiday sessions after november 30th.  i've set this deadline to be sure that i'm able to give each client the same quality of care as far as completing the session and getting the order produced, packaged, and delivered on time.

don't let december sneak up on you! this is your chance to get ahead on your gifts and to get some great photos to keep and to give away!  check out my boards on pintrest for new ideas on how to gift your photos in more than just a picture frame this year.
